2020 Northern Cape Awards
Fame Academy in collaboration with the Cultural and Creative Industry Foundation of South Africa (CCIFSA), Kia, National Lottery Commission and Northern Cape Department of Arts and Culture, announced, at a media briefing held at Flamingo Casino on Friday 13th November the nominations for the forthcoming Northern Cape Awards.
This was preceded by the launch on 30 October at the Northern Cape Theatre.
At the launch, CEO and Founder of Fame College, Matodzi Makananisa, said, “Northern Cape will never be the same after these prestigious awards. The purpose of the awards is to develop and acknowledge the rich and diverse talent found in the Northern Cape,” declared Makananisa.
The ultimate prize is a Kia Picanto vehicle, which will be presented by Premier Saul Zamani. “However, the car will only be released to the winner after all the necessary paperwork has been submitted, including a valid driver’s license,” cautioned Makananisa.
David Mdutywana from the Department of Arts and Culture applauded Matodzi for this initiative as the Department does not have the resources to conduct a project of this magnitude. He also expressed concern about the project’s sustenance and requested sponsors not to make this a once-off event.
Over 1000 nominations were received and sent to an independent panel of adjudicators in Johannesburg who selected the nominees.
The public is spoilt for choice as they will have the privilege to vote in 28 categories. The Lifetime Achiever Award Categories is not open for voting public, but is rather reserved for MEC for Sports Arts and Culture, Desery Fienies.
Makananisa mentioned that the awards will create jobs that would boost the ailing economy and give the Province much needed exposure.
The positive response he received from Gail Mabalane and Proverb to host the awards humbled him.
He made a surprise announcement, the hunt for a Female Co-Presenter for the awards. Aspiring young female presenters are encouraged to enter the competition by uploading a video of themselves on the Northern Cape Awards Facebook page. The public will vote for their favourite co-host. The successful candidate will win R10 000,00 and an opportunity to be mentored, coached and co-host the awards with Gail and Proverb.
The awards will be held on 15 December at the Northern Cape Theatre. Due to Covid-19, only 250 people will be allowed in the gallery. Therefore people are encouraged to go early. No space will be reserved.
