Sol Plaatje University has registered a record 959 new students for the year 2021. Eight hundred and three are first-time undergraduate students, while the number for new postgraduate students is 156. There is a total of 2685 students enrolled at the University this year. By 2030 the number is anticipated to reach over 8000 students.
“We buck the trend in terms of female students who make up 60.4% of the first-year undergraduate class. Our students hail from all nine provinces, but the majority come from the Northern Cape and the North West Province. Of those from the Northern Cape Province, about 50% come from Kimberley,” said the university’s Communications Manager, Kashni Maistry.
As the only university in the Northern Cape Province, Sol Plaatje University is expected to generate new knowledge and produce skills needed to influence tomorrow’s technological advances and to play a significant role in positing and transforming the economy of the Province and society at large.
“Since opening our doors in 2014, we have established ourselves as a center for data science and analytics. In the Humanities, we stand out in Archaeology, Anthropology, Heritage and Creative Writing in African languages. Our flagship program in Education includes specializations in Mathematics, language teaching and curriculum development. For the entrepreneur, Sol Plaatje University is an emerging hub for Management Sciences and Entrepreneurship. This year we will offer our first Master’s qualification,” said a proud Maistry.
The 2021 first-year undergraduate class is mainly enrolled in the Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Arts, Higher Certificate in Court Interpretation, and the Higher Certificate in Heritage Studies.
“Our new postgraduate students are reading towards the Bachelor of Education (Honours), Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) in Sociology, Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Data Science and for the Master of Arts,” she added.
On 1 May 2021, Sol Plaatje University will hold its 6th Graduation Ceremony, where 403 degrees will be conferred. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions the ceremony will be entirely online.
“We will now have just over 1100 graduates who stand out based on their different world views and diversity of opinions. They integrate and contest knowledge and are committed to life-long learning,” mentioned the Communications Manager.
