Water Update: 11 January 2023
The Municipality observed a dropping in water levels on Sunday, 8 January.
The technicians discovered that one of the high lift pumps was tripping at Riverton. The setting on the pump was continuously tripping when the water levels at the reservoir were at 50%. This was not supposed to happen. The pumps are set only to trip when the levels reach 30% at Riverton. Each time the pump trips, we experience a downtime of 2 hours, resulting in water levels dropping at the Newton reservoir.
The Pumps operate with software that is used to set the safety parameters of the pumps, it was resolved on Monday. The pump is no longer tripping, and there is now continuous water pumping through the two main pipelines which supply water to Kimberley. One high lift pump, which pumps clean water to Kimberley, was repaired and put back into operation on 10 January after its electrical panel exploded.
The Municipality’s maintenance team is also working on repairing the river’s fifth raw water abstraction pump. After being repaired and put back into operation, this pump will ensure sufficient raw water to the treatment plant. This operation has already started and will be completed over the weekend.
Nightly shutdowns will continue from 20:00pm -04:00am until levels are up to standard. We are aware of the inconvenience caused by this sporadic mishap in the city and are doing our best to bring this back to normal.
