Residents from Donkerhoek in ward eight Galeshewe are frustrated with the rise of crime in their area, and they have threatened to take the law into their own hands. Because of the increasing amount of burglaries and robberies that took place since the lockdown period.
In their recent meeting to discuss crime issues, community members complained about a lack of police presence. According to reports, angry residents took matters into their own hands several weeks ago when they beat up a young man suspected of terrorizing the community and committing crimes.
Linda Chweu said, “’the community will be forced to take the law into their hands if the police fail to fight crime in our ward. We are tired of thugs doing as they wish’’. She added that they had reported many housebreaking, theft, and drug-related cases since the beginning of the national lockdown but to no avail.
Pogisho Makgari, a member of the newly established Wanya tsotsi structure in Ward eight, made a plea to community members to be united and fight against drugs and crime.
Makgari blamed the absence of the police as the contributing factor to the growing number of crimes. “All we want is a crime-free area,’’ lamented Makgari. He requested the police to work very hard in addressing crime because they are tired of what is happening.
The police’s spokesperson, Captain Bashoabile Kale, warned residents not to take the law into their own hands but to work with the police by reporting any criminal case.
