One night with Jonathan Butler
Story supplied:
Kimberley will come alive next month as entertainment company Zigmo Promotions brings the first International concert by musician Jonathan Butler to the Mittah Seperepere Convention centre for a concert on 19 March.
The “One Night Only” concert, headlined by the Cape Town-born musician who now lives in Los Angeles, will also feature another Kimberley-born and bred music legend, Dr Victor and his band, The Rasta Rebels.
Popular local bands Deekamo and Dee-Tone will separately set the concert tone and open the stage for the stars of the evening. Another fast-growing local band, Empire will also strut its stuff on stage.
Butler was born in South Africa under the shadow of apartheid and raised in poverty. He was the first non-white artist to be played on South African radio and to appear on national television.
According to Molusi, the concert is a culmination of a long and strenuous attempt to secure a date in the busy performance schedules of Butler and Dr Victor.
Butler has other scheduled concerts in Botswana, Mozambique, Cape Town and Durban.
Dr Victor, real name Victor Kujane, has been crafting and creating an uplifting up-tempo sound that has earned the singer, musician, songwriter and producer an enviable reputation on the South African music scene and abroad.
Dr Victor began playing around Kimberley while he was still at school in a band called the Young Ones and CC Beat. He and the band left for greener pastures in the 1980s.
CC Beat began playing in nightclubs in Johannesburg and secured a recording contract. They started recording albums and worked with top South African acts that over the years catapulted the band into respectable recognition.
Under Dr Victor’s leadership, the band seized every opportunity to grab the country’s attention and to occupy center stage in the music scene.
“I’ve had the privilege to tour abroad and play in all corners of Our country, but It’s always heartwarming and humbling to come back to my roots. This is where my life story began. To be billed on the same lineup as my hero Jonathan Butler is almost surreal. I cannot wait to do what I know best”, said Dr Victor.
Tickets are available at Computicket and Shoprite Checkers for R250.
