The Department of Roads And Public Works, in partnership with the Sol Plaatje municipality, has launched a program aimed at patching of potholes around Kimberley and surrounding areas. The city said that the pothole-repair campaign is part of making sure that residents get better service delivery.

“The purpose of the campaign is to ensure that our residents get services. We know that many people around Kimberley are complaining about the state of our roads. Through this campaign, we want to ensure that roads are maintained continually. The campaign started in Roodepan, but other teams will be working around the entire city. We have a plan to do permanent repairs to ensure better quality,” said Executive Mayor Patrick Mabilo

Mabilo indicated that the municipality would like to collaborate with businesses around the city to ensure proper maintenance of Kimberley’s central business district. “We will engage with businesses around the city to encourage them to give back to the community by and assisting us in making Kimberley a beautiful place. As the Province’s capital and tourist destination, it is important to pursue this project to boost revenue,” concluded Mabilo.

The MEC of Roads and Public Works Fufe Makatong emphasized that maintaining roads in Kimberley must be undertaken from time to time. “We will join hands with the Sol Plaatje municipality in addressing the problem of potholes. This campaign will not only focus on the CBD. Areas such as Galeshewe and Ritchie must also benefit,” said Makatong. The MEC stated that the department came on board because they are aware of the municipality’s financial challenges. “This campaign is our way of showing commitment to deliver basic services that will improve the well-being of our communities,” said Makatong.

Motorist, Fikile Bok from Roodepan was elated to see the municipality in action.  “I am pleased that the municipality is finally here to fix our roads. Motorists have been experiencing bad driving conditions. We can breathe a sigh of relief; at least things will be better. We appreciate this gesture, but we want something permanent,” added Bok.
