RUN AGAINST WORLD HUNGER

The Kimberley Harriers Running Club, in partnership with Meals on Wheels Community Services – Northern Cape, is hosting a Saturday run to celebrate World Hunger Day on May 27 from 07: 00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The run will start at the Engen Garage, Oliver Road, Kimberley. Community members are invited to join this initiative by either participating in the run or donating non-perishable food items and cash. All donations will go towards Meals on Wheels Community Services-Northern Cape, an organisation dedicated to fighting hunger and poverty by providing daily nutritious meals, a basket of services, and skills development training to underprivileged community members.

Meals on Wheels Community Services is a national organisation formed in 1964 and for 59 years, it’s been helping to fight hunger and poverty in South Africa.

The organisation has 20 branches, 17 vehicles and over 70 dedicated volunteers in the Northern Cape.

Roshelle Jacobs, Kimberley Harriers Running Club Captain, said the club takes seriously the need to raise awareness of hunger because thousands of people across the Northern Cape and the world are facing severe food shortages and undernutrition.

“We love running and helping those less fortunate than us; hence we saw it fit to use this as an opportunity to come together and assist those most vulnerable,” she remarked.

Thomas Chisveto, Meals on Wheels Finance Director, added that the organisation is committed to ensuring a Hunger-Free South Africa. However, achieving this goal requires the combined efforts of everyone.

“We are pleading to ordinary citizens, government institutions, and private businesses to help us make a difference in the lives of others,” said Chisveto.

World Hunger Day was formed in 2011 by the Hunger Project to bring awareness to the global food crisis. The day is celebrated annually on May 28.

According to the World Hunger Day website, 800 million people are hungry, while a third of all food is wasted. This year’s campaign focuses on the role of creating sustainable food systems
