TAILOR-MADE HEALTH SERVICES FOR THE YOUTH

Karabelo Dithebe, Support Officer from Grassroot Edge, said they are thrilled to be part of the Men Dialogue by assisting in trying to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS, including other ailments.

Grassroot Edge targets the youth, ages 14 to 24, through offering services ranging from Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) screening for various ailments and family planning products. They offer Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (Prep) and Self-testing kits

psycho-social support counseling, and other social services that benefit the youth. Professional medical personnel and social workers are also available.

Grassroot operates from five safe space service centres within the Sol Plaatje Municipality: Ritchie, Ou Green Point, Phuthanang, Platfontein and Homevale. The spaces consist of counseling and activity rooms where clients receive counseling while a risk profile is developed for a correct referral. The organisation’s reach extends to other places through mobile facilities.

“We are well received within the communities. As stakeholders with the Department of Health, our goal is to decongest the clinics by bringing services closer, which helps reduce stigma, particularly for the young adults,” said Dithebe.
