MEC for Social Development, Nontobeko Vilakazi distributed 100 hand sanitizers and face masks. Homeless people living in dumps under De Beers Road Bridge and street kids, including unemployed men on the roadside near Pick n Pay, Rhodesdene, and Caltex Garage in McDougal Road, were the recipients.
The department took this initiative to reduce coronavirus spread and commemorate World Population Day under the theme ,“Putting the brakes on Covid -19”.
11 July is World Population Day, but due to the Covid -19 pandemic, it was moved to 20 October.
The MEC acknowledged the daily struggles faced by the beneficiaries. She gave them hope and encouraged them to follow all health protocols because the pandemic is not over yet.
One of the recipients, Victor Selelo said, “We appreciate this wonderful gesture. We are honoured to meet the MEC and to know that there are people who care about us.”
