Legal Aid SA Office hosted four leaners from Kimberley Boys High School, Floors High School, Kimberley Technical High School, St Boniface High School and William Pescod High School for the annual one-day job shadowing. The program is called Legal Aid SA Justice Super Stars Initiative. The purpose to expose leaners to a legal environment.
The day started with learners forming part of the morning routine, a session whereby cases are discussed according to their stages; this platform is also used to impart knowledge to younger lawyers. After the morning routine, each leaner was allocated to “a place of employment” a Lawyer, then went to various courts.
The leaners attend cases in the district and regional courtrooms to observe lawyers’ daily tasks to prosecute and defend accused persons.
Zandile Zozi from Floors High School shared her experienced and described the time in court as intellectually and emotionally challenging. She continued to express that the experience showed that much must be done to implement the tenets of the Constitution. She added that, “the stories of victims of gender-based violence and femicide have made a warrior of me”.
The Legal Aid SA Northern Cape/ Western Cape Provincial Office initiated this programme with the hope that such opportunities will continue accelerating the lives of youth today, towards a sustainable future.
Participants from grade 9 to 11 are contenders in this year’s Provincial Moot Court Competition taking place later on in the year.
The South African Constitution mandates Legal Aid South Africa to represent citizen who cannot afford Lawyers with legal services who cannot afford.
