South Africa is brewing with excitement as it gears up to host the Netball World Cup. The National and Provincial Departments of Sports Arts and Culture afforded Northern Cape an opportunity to view the prestigious trophy.
President of Netball South Africa, Cecilia Molokwane, accompanied by government officials, traveled with the award to Northern Cape on 24 June.
Letsatsi, the official Netball World Cup mascot, escorted the ebony, silver and gold detailed trophy.
The trophy paraded around several places from Spar Monument Heights, followed by Northern Cape High School, thereafter it was shown throughout the Kimberley city centre, making its way to Floors, Colville and the Galeshewe Circle.
Chief Director of Sports, Arts and Culture, David Mdutyana, was in awe of the joy emitted by the crowd, said “this initiative has created a buzz, igniting passion and uniting communities. Despite our past, this is the type of atmosphere one can when our people get together, expect.”
The trophy also created inspiration among the youth. Omphile Rethabile Leepile, captain of the Golden Phoenix Netball Club, said, “there is not a lot of encouragement for young players in our communities. This event motivates us to see what we can achieve in the future”.
An elated member of SPU Netball Team, Nthabeleng Hlahane, perceived this as a chance to learn and meet other people who enjoy the game.
According to Molokwane, the reason for showcasing the trophy is to gives ardent supporters a chance to have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of seeing the trophy in person.
The day’s highlight was when the public took pictures alongside Letsatsi and the trophy.
The trophy will travel to other parts of the province, thereafter it will proceed to the Eastern Cape.
As the trophy continues its nationwide journey, the excitement builds towards the grand finale in Cape Town. It serves as a reminder that netball is not only for the elite but a sport everyone can enjoy.
Boasting with state-of-the-art facilities Cape Town is primed to deliver a spectacular event. Teams worldwide will converge to battle for glory, showcasing their skill, teamwork and determination.
