The South African National Boxing Organisation (SANABO) held an interclub tournament at the Recreation Hall in Kimberley on 17 June.  Contenders came from Freedom Boxing Club, Platinum Boxing Club, Northern Cape Academy and Home Defenders Boxing Club.

The fights were in preparation for the Youth and Elite Championships in Tzaneen, Limpopo, from 6 to 14 July 2023.

The eleven-bouts match displayed the incredible talent of potential boxers fighting it out in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

The first fight was between George Pienaar and Karabo Lephatse. Pienaar displayed superior boxing skills in winning the first round by delivering a vicious blow to Lephatse.

An entertaining bout was between Damien Brooker and Phatsimo Bekeer. Brooker showed beautiful footwork jumping out of range at Bekeer’s attack.  Despite Bekeer’s height advantage, Brooker controlled the fight and won on points.

The duel between Thabisho Moabi and Amogelang Moruri was one-sided.  It lasted less than one minute and thirty seconds when Moabi hit Moruri with a powerful jab.  The referee stopped the fight, fearing for  Moruri’s safety.

Lethabe Palweni and Veronica Sere’s fight got the biggest cheers, with the crowd on their feet.  Palweni won unanimously.

Francis Baard Boxing Organisation President, Gregory Reid stated, “we need more female contenders in boxing”.

“Boxing is more than a sport as it transcends all aspects of life.  Under the watchful eye of experienced coaches and trainers, these athletes are pushed to their limits physically and mentally, continued Reid.

He indicated that boxing is a sporting code that deals with the same ups and downs experienced in life, including preparations taken to pursue goals.

These boxing clubs are a testament to the power of hard work, discipline and passion.

This will undoubtedly be a must-see spectacle as South Africa’s top fighters converge in Limpopo, striving for glory.
