Church and government holding hands in aiding communities

As part of helping needy families affected by the corona-virus pandemic,The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donates over 5000 food parcels to the Department of Social Development.

Ten of these food parcels were handed over to child and youth headed families at Mayibuye Cultural Centre, the remaining will be distributed to other families in the province.

MEC for Social Development, Nontobeko Vilakazi expressed gratitude when receiving the food parcels on behalf of the provincial government. “We thank the leadership of the church for taking care of the needy. Many families are struggling to make ends meet during this time, as people have lost jobs.”

Vilakazi stressed that her department will ensure that all food parcels go to deserving families. “The allocation process will be supervised by Social Workers in conjunction with other stakeholders to eliminate any corruption,” she said.

Appreciating the gesture, 21-Year-old recipient, Obakeng Ditire said, “As the firstborn, my siblings rely on me to provide. I’m unemployed and relatives are not helping as they also have their own needs.” He explained that he ended up resorting to crime to provide for his siblings.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints high councilor, Neo Sidumo said they are grateful that they could intervene and help the poor in their time of need. “We’re following the example of our Savior Jesus Christ because the Bible also urges us to feed the hungry and take care of orphans and widows,” added Sidumo.

Sidumo also stated that the Northern Cape was the last province in South African to receive the donation, as this is an international intervention to assist the poor. He indicated that they made donations to more than 100 countries.
