SASSA services are free

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) took the trouble to reiterate that all their services to the public provided are provided free of charge in response to recent reports and concerns raised by beneficiaries and the general public.

A general media statement issued by the agency said: “It is of utmost importance to ensure that beneficiaries are not misled by incorrect information or scammers trying to solicit monies from them. SASSA condemns criminal activities of scammers extorting money from community members on the promise to offer SASSA services faster than the normal process. The latest incidents have been reported in the ZF Mgcawu district where applicants were told to pay certain amounts in order to ensure that their grant applications are approved.

We urge all beneficiaries to remain vigilant and informed regarding services provided by SASSA. It is important to remember that SASSA does not charge any fees for its services and beneficiaries should not pay for any assistance or information related to their grants or any other services”.

The cautionary statement continued to say: “If beneficiaries encounter any individual or organisation attempting to charge money for SASSA services, we encourage them to report such incidents immediately at their nearest SASSA office or contact the Anti-Corruption Hotline at 0800 701 701 or the SASSA National Toll-Free number at 0800 60 10 11.

SASSA is committed to protecting the rights and well-being of beneficiaries. We will work tirelessly to investigate reports of misleading practices and take appropriate action against individuals or organisations found to be exploiting beneficiaries for personal gain”.

For more information about SASSA services, eligibility criteria, and other related matters, beneficiaries are encouraged to visit the official SASSA website at www.sassa.gov.za or contact their nearest SASSA office.
