“For black girls who have yet to forgive themselves”

By Waaqiah Jaffer

This book by Tlhalefo Tefo Molatlhegi is a combination of confessional storytelling and upliftment for young black women and promotes self- acceptance, self-worth and dignity.

The author is an ambitious 29-year-old who grew up in Taung, Northern Cape but recently moved to Johannesburg. She confessed to always having loved reading, writing and poetry. Her favourite book is ‘Comfort Herself’ by Geraldine Kaye.

What was the inspiration behind writing the book?: “It was a natural progression to want to be published and have people read my writings as well”, she said. “This book specifically deals with current social topics and was my own personal love letter to every black girl”.

Molatlhegi’s inspiration came from Ntozake Shange’s theatre piece, “For Coloured Girls”.

After completing her primary education at Pinnacle Private Primary and Secondary Boarding School. She then went on to study at Sacred Hearts Private Combined School but matriculated from Kimberley Girls’ High.

Molatlhegi obtained her BCom degree from Nelson Mandela University. “I also hold a certificate in Project Management from the University of South Africa which I passed with distinction. I am a corporate girlie”.

Molatlhegi is not the first one to write a book in her family. She is the first to have published one. “Everyone was happy, especially my mother who is my biggest supporter”.

In her spare time, she enjoys cooking and is interested in photography. “I enjoy watching reality shows and screaming at the TV, listening to all my favourite artists. I have a bad habit of repeating a song until I can’t listen to it anymore”.

Like every individual challenges crossed her path too. Molatlhegi explained that “life is a series of tests, if not we wouldn’t have the experiences we have. Most things happen and I don’t know how I survived them. I guess you can say that I don’t give up and I believe that things get better”, she laughed a little.

Despite these events Molatlhegi remains optimistic and encourages writers that: “it is always important to start writing. Do it. Pick up the pen and just do it. Writing is different for everyone. Some people need peace and some need chaos. Whatever works for you, just do that”, she advised.
