T0he South African Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Thandi Modise on Thursday visited the site of the veld fire that ripped through the SA Army combat school in Lohatla and claimed the lives of six members.

On Friday last week a devastating veld fire had set alight several military vehicles including part of a site camp that housed military personnel for the duration of a planned war exercises simulation.

The fire outbreak at the camp was confirmed by the SA Army spokesperson Major-General Rene Mercuur.

Preliminary indications are that the fire apparently overwhelmed some of the military personnel and six were confirmed dead. A further three army members were still in hospital receiving treatment for second degree burns.

At the Lohatla base on Thursday Minister Modise joined members of the army and their families in a memorial service for the soldiers who perished in the fire.
