Mzi Makapela, the founder and chief executive officer of Revival FM, was born in Mokgareng village, Greater Taung on 7 May 1973. His family relocated to Kimberley when he was 15 years of age.
He matriculated at Emang Mmogo Comprehensive School in 1992. He completed a Public Relations and Media Studies course in 2001 at Technikon SA. Makapela got married to Moipone (nee Molusi) in 2002. They are blessed with four children; two boys and two girls.
Makapela has been involved in the community radio sector for the past 30 years and has experience in community media development projects. He was involved with Radio Teemaneng when that station started out in the late 90’s.
His responsibilities in Radio Teemaneng’s management included ensuring the implementation of the requisite policies and procedures. He established networks with various organisations with similar objectives which ensured the station’s compliance with the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa’s (ICASA) standards.
Makapela was also involved with the establishment of two community radio stations in the Northern Cape province namely: Ulwazi FM in De Aar in 200 and Revival FM SA in Kimberley in 2012.
He was elected as the chairperson of the Radio Teemaneng Board of directors from 2006 until 2008. He became the first chairperson of the Northern Cape National Community Radio Forum from 2007 until 2008. He is the founder and director of Mokgareng Media since 2008. This is a boutique media company responsible for assisting in establishing community radio stations in South Africa.
Makapela is the current chairperson and chief executive officer of Omolemo Trust, known as Revival FM SA. He is also a director of Mzi Makapela Foundation Trust and the Managing Director of Mophakathi Holdings.
