The Northern Cape health department have warned that there is a Rubella outbreak in the Pixley ka Seme district where a total of fifty- two cases have been confirmed in places such as Phillipstown, Hopetown and De Aar.
Health department spokesperson Lulu Mxekezo issued a statement this week warning about the symptoms of the infections of Rubella. These include a fine rash on the face and neck, fever, sore throat, ear infection, nausea, headache, cough, runny nose, lymph nodes in the neck and pink eyes. Parents and or guardians are requested to contact the nearest clinic if they recognise the symptoms.
Rubella is common in children but adults can get infected as well. It is transmitted through direct or droplet contact from the mouth. The infection has an average incubation period of 17 days with a range of 12 – 23 days. Infected persons shed the virus from 7 days after the onset of the symptoms.
There is no specific treatment for the condition, but symptoms can be treated with enough rest and medication of fever. Vaccination is effective in preventing rubella and confers life-long immunity.
