Sol municipality battles another major water leak

Residents of the greater Sol Plaatje municipality woke up on Thursday to yet another water crisis announcement as the local authority battled with a massive leak from a major water artery located in the Phomolong/Kutlwanong areas of Galeshewe.

Thabo Mothibi, the newly appointed municipal spokesperson, on Thursday morning bombarded residents with warnings about a major leak on the water reticulation network. The general message from his account read:

“Major setback in our efforts to ensure stable (fresh water) supply. Valve chamber leakage in the Phomolong and 2000 vicinity. Waterworks teams are draining the chamber. Network isolation will be effected to thwart current losses and rectify the problem. We do not rule out the possibility of valve tampering at this stage.

The municipal cautionaries continued throughout the day as the communications team gave updates on the situation.

“Repair work on the flow meter flange adapter remains in progress and should be completed into the evening of today, (Thursday 30 Nov) at about 22h00.  It has since been established that the rupture has not affected the main supply line to the Newton reservoirs.

The residential areas that are affected are; Phutanang, Ipeleng, Club 2000 and Phomolong. Water tankering has been effected for relief supply in the stated areas. We would like to assure residents that all efforts are being undertaken to meet tonight’s (10pm) deadline. We deeply regret the inconveniences caused and we plead for your patience”.

The latest water crisis followed shortly after the municipality had about a week ago concluded a three-day water leak stoppage operation on the same reticulation lines located nearer the water source in the northern areas of the town.

By late Thursday afternoon the municipal emergency teams were still hard at work trying to fix the problem.

According to site pictures posted by Mothibi’s team the executive mayor Kagiso Sonyoni had in the course of the day visited the teams which were busy on the site with the water leakage repairs in Phomolong.
