The Department of Roads and Public Works celebrated 20 years of a nationwide government programme, the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) at AR Abass Stadium yesterday.
This programme was implemented in 2004 to alleviate poverty and reduce the unemployment rate of the country. It has proved to have been a success as there were several testimonies from the participants of the programme.
MEC responsible for the Department of Roads and Public Works, Fufe Makatong acknowledged the challenges faced by the programmes regarding late payment of stipends. However, she promised participants that henceforth stipends would be paid on the last day of the month as it should be.
She reassured participants of her availability. “If anyone makes you work without proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)I am a phone call away.
Premier, Dr Zamani Saul was impressed by the popularity and warmth participants showed towards Makatong and said it confirmed her presence and active leadership.
“I was unemployed for many years until this programme came to Plaatfontein, I have an income now. I am not only thankful for myself but I am also grateful for the opportunities that the youth in our village have been given” said a representative from the San community in Plaatfontein.
People came to Kimberley to celebrate and share their stories. Members of Saltlake Residents Action Group (SARAG) an organisation based in Douglas, believe that poverty has been addressed, lives have been changed and they are proud to be a part of this programme.
Another success was of Kagisho Tlhageng, owner of African Moon Logistics and Supply Pty (Ltd) which was registered in 2016 and paused operation in 2020 due to Covid-19. “In 2022, I got an opportunity to join EPWP and it played a huge role in my life administratively and business-wise.” He also mentioned that his business received funding from NYDA and is grateful for all entities involved in his growth as a young person interested in hiking and outdoor activities.
The highlight of the day was the graduation ceremony for 55 artisans who participated and completed the Phakamile Mabija Apprenticeship. The graduates are now qualified in fields such as Diesel Mechanics, Fitting and Turning, Millwright, Boilermaking and Electrician. The Diesel and Refrigeration Mechanics were trained by MERSETA and the department.
