Christmas is time to share

On 19 December, the Salvation Army Church in Kekana Street, Galeshewe, held their first Give a Smile to a Child Fun Day. The campaign started in November with the church band playing Christmas Carols at different malls and requesting community members to donated toys.

Reverend Sanele Ndlovu explained that children from underprivileged families do not receive gifts during the festive season.  They manage to collect 200 toys for their first effort.

“The festivities started at 11:00, as the churchyard was already filled with 195 happy faces, covered with masks, the guests were two hours early.  The children’s ages ranged from three to thirteen years old,” said Ndlovu.

“All activities happened simultaneously, to create social distancing and to minimise the risk of infection. The children had fun with face painting, two jumping castles, a variety of games and singing.  My favourite part was the photo booth with myself as Father Christmas, it was the first time I played that role and I enjoyed it”, said the enthusiastic Ndlovu.

He explained that they wanted to help children end 2020 on a high note, seeing that it was such a challenging year due to the pandemic.

Ndlovu praised his congregation and the community for the support, he said “our church members contributed towards party packets, drinks and hot dogs, they also participated with all the arrangements and distribution of food and toys. Five community members from the neighbourhood also came to assist”.

He encouraged Christians to continue praying and revive the spirit of giving to those living in poverty or the less fortunate. He mentioned that the church intends to make this an annual event.  He appealed to corporate and individuals to partner with the church on this worthy cause.
