Family seek justice for murdered businessman

The family of 28-year-old Jason Afrique said his untimely death has changed their lives. Afrique, a well-known businessman and a member of bikers’ CC Riders Club, was shot and killed near his home in Newpark, Kimberley, on 31 July. The shooting incident happened when Afrique and his 27-year-old wife were about to enter their complex with their Toyota Hilux. His wife sustained gun shot wounds.

This shooting incident left many Kimberley residents reeling in shock; police arrested 38-year-old former policeman John Ross Henderson on September 20.

At the time of printing this newspaper, Henderson is applying for bail.

Since the beginning of the case, members of CC Riders and Kimberley residents flocked to the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court room. D.

During the court proceedings, Henderson’s defense argued that Afrique murder was not premeditated.

Afrique’s family said they want justice to prevail.  Jayson’s distraught sister, Samantha Afrique, said: “As the family, we know that nothing will bring back our beloved son, brother and friend who was taken away from us by a cold-blooded murdering coward, but we will not stop fighting for justice to be served and we believe that God will ensure that justice will prevail.”

“The incident was extremely traumatic and has affected everyone. Our lives have changed drastically, and we don’t have any peace or closure. The over-a-week court proceedings for bail application are both physically and emotionally exhausting,” Afrique said.

We are there from 8 am until the courts close in the afternoon. Hearing the events that happened that dreadful night leaves us heartbroken every time.”

Meanwhile DA member of Parliament Lisa  Schickerling joined Afrique’s close friends to oppose bail.

Schickerling said many accused case are thrown out of the court when they got bail.

Jason Afrique was buried on 6 August in Kimberley.

It is still not clear what caused Jason Afrique’s cold-blooded murder but police investigation is continuing. Police have opened a case of murder and attempted murder.
