Law enforcement agencies celebrate Heritage Month

The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola joined by the Deputy Director of Correctional Services, Phillip Phajane hosted a combined Heritage Month event at Kimberley Correctional Services on Wednesday, 2 October 2024, under the theme “Celebrating the lives of our heroes and heroines who laid down their lives for freedom”.

The event was attended by senior SAPS officers, including the Acting Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection and Corporate Services, Major General Jacques Raymond, Brigadier Teresia Bosman from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations, Brigadier Nicholas Mtongana, the Station Commander of Kimberley SAPS, Provincial Heads and Unit Commanders as well as senior prison officials from the Tswelopele and Kimberley Correctional Centres.

In her keynote address, Lieutenant General Otola indicated that Heritage Month is commemorated so that we may embrace our diversity, preserve our cultural heritage, and foster reconciliation and healing.

Several components from SAPS and Correctional Services displayed diverse cultures and prepared traditional dishes.

The judging panel comprising of Lieutenant General Otola, Deputy Director Phajane, and Brigadier Bosman were treated to sketches and traditional meals by the different cultural groups, including Sotho, Afrikaner, Tswana, Xhosa and Bosveld.

Certificates and medals were awarded based on the accuracy of displays, attire, and traditional dishes.

SAPS Provincial Emergency Service and Firearm, Liquor, and Second Hand Goods Component were awarded for the best dish and décor. Kimberley Correctional Centre was awarded for best team spirit, the best dressed male was Warrant Officer Rynand Joubert from the SAPS Sports Office, and the best dressed female was Dora Khumalo from Kimberley Correctional Services.

The SAPS and Correctional Services united in diversity to continue building a nation that celebrates the past, embraces the present and shapes the future.
