The family of 28-year-old Jayson Afrique have welcome the decision of the Kimberley Magistrate denying bail against the man accused of his murder. 38-year-old John Ross Henderson was denied bail on 4 October following days of concerted battle by his legal to have him released on bail.

Afrique was shot and killed near his home in Newpark, Kimberley, on 31 July when he and his 27-year-old wife were about to enter their home. His wife sustained gunshot wounds.

Henderson, a former policeman who is also a businessman, was arrested on 20 September after police established a high-level probe into Afrique’s death.

During the court proceedings of his bail application, Henderson’s defence argued that their client was “framed.”

Afrique’s family said they are relieved because the accused was denied bail following concerns raised about the safety of Jayson’s wife.

The deceased sister, Samantha Afrique, said the family welcomed the court’s decision, although it won’t return her brother.

“We are still sad, but we are strong for our brother. We are yet to find closure because we want to know the truth,”

Last week, Samantha Afrique told Roma Nna Publication that the incident was traumatic and affected everyone in the family. She said the incident, has changed their lives drastically.

Meanwhile rumors are doing rounds that Henderson’s defence team intends to appeal the bail decision.

The case has been postponed to 25 November 2024.
