ANIMAL POACHING ACCUSED CONVICTED IN THE REGIONAL COURT OF UPINGTON
The investigating officer of Upington Stock-Theft and Endangered Spices Unit, Warrant Officer Jacques Ockhuys, was commended for the excellent work that led to the conviction for Illegal Hunting.
On 08 September 2018, three springboks were poached on a farm in the vicinity of Witdraai. The police arrested three suspects for the alleged poaching, and a hunting rifle was seized. The charges against the other two were withdrawn.
The accused, Jean Pierre van Schalkwyk (39), was found guilty in Upington Regional Court on 31 May 2023 on three charges. He was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment, half suspended for 5 years or R6000 fine for Theft, 3 years imprisonment, half suspended for 5 years or R6000 fine for Transporting of wild animal without a permit and 12 months imprisonment, wholefully suspended for 5 years for Trespassing.
