Galeshewe based Aztec FC won the second and final leg of the Sol Plaatje Masters Football League by a single goal to none at the Galeshewe stadium in Kimberley last Sunday.

The match began with Aztec having the upperhand having bagged a slim 1-0 lead from their home game in the first leg of the finals.

On Sunday during the second leg final Juventus took the lead 1-0 in the first twenty minutes of the game. On aggregate the score was now level at 1-1.

This seemed to ignite a fire in the Aztec team that immediately started attacking Juventus and were rewarded shortly by scoring the match equalising goal (1-1) through a brilliant strike from outside the box.

Aztec were now on the ascendency as they scored yet again (2-1) with a strike that left the Juventus keeper rooted on his spot. The ball hit the inside of the post before going into the back of the net.

The game was by now well and firmly in the hands of the Aztec team when the first half ended with Aztec leading 3-1 on aggregate.

The second half started with Juventus very refreshed. They took the fight to Aztec and were immediately rewarded with a goal.

The score was now 2-2 on the day but Aztec were still leading 3-2 on aggregate. This did not deter the home team as they scored yet another goal and were now leading the game on the day by three goals to two (3-2) but the aggregate was now 3-3 with Aztec leading on the away goal rule having scored two away goals.

Though both teams tried to score the last and definitive goal that will result in either team winning the Sol Plaatje Masters league championship. The game ended 3-2 in favour of Juventus. But Juventus ultimately lost on the away goal rule as the aggregate score was 3-3. Aztec were now the champions to the delight of the team and its supporters.

The chairperson of Aztec Wandile Mdlala remarked: “It took blood, sweat and tears to emerge victorious. We had to do things differently as a team, like realign our vision and define our purpose.” This seemed to have made all the difference between the teams.
