DEPARTMENT SHOCKED BY DROWNING INCIDENT

Staff Reporter

Northern Cape Department of Education is shocked and saddened by an unfortunate incident that occurred at the Kimberley Boys High School this afternoon. This unfortunate incident led to the drowning of a learner who is related to the rugby coach of the school. Although the deceased is not a learner at the school, the Department conveys their most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

The incident happened just after rugby practice, whilst learners were passing the pool area, on their way to pack away the rugby equipment. They were playing and pushing each other next to the pool area, when two children fell in the pool, of which one was the deceased. The Emergency Medical Services were immediately notified and on their arrival, the boy was declared dead on the scene.

The Department will activate employee support services to provide counselling and support to those directly affected.
