An all Northern Cape football affair will take place at the Windhoek Draught Park in Kimberley on Sunday afternoon as Hungry Lions take on Upington City in the Motsepe Foundation championship clash
Hungry Lions are second on the National First Division log with four points from their first two games of the season. Upington City are number placed seventh on the log from their first two games. Both teams had a winning start to the season with only a point separating the two teams on the log.
Sunday’s clash at Griqua Park will see either of the teams finishing in the top three after a win at the end of this weekend as both teams look to build on their favourable starts to the season.
The match will be played at Windhoek Draught Park. The game will begin at 3pm pm on Sunday the 17 September.
This match will be the first time the two teams clash in the Motsepe Foundation championship. This is Upington City FC’s first stint in the first division. This will be a home game for the Hungry Lions FC, though the team is based in Postmasburg.
The teams will once again face each other in the reverse fixture on 13 February 2024 provided the fixture list does not change.
It promises to be an exciting match for the professional football starved locals who will be looking forward to seeing which team comes out on top in this second tier league encounter.
The match also holds the promise of turning into a great spectacle for the Sunday afternoon. The team that wins will be looking to solidify its spot as one of the top teams in the Safa first division. Hungry Lions will be looking to use their experience in the championship to their advantage. However, they do know that they have a formidable opponent going against them in Upington City.
The fans of both teams are eager to witness the match and expect nothing less than a win from their teams. One passionate fan stated on Upington City’s Facebook page “City family it’s our time, victory is ours.”
Hungry Lions fans, who evidently are also eyeing a victory, stated on social media: “Looking forward to this game. Hungry Lions make us proud.”
This is a thrilling derby to look forward to this Sunday as Hungry Lions look to assert their dominance over rivals while Upington City are looking forward to overthrowing the old stalwart of the Motsepe Foundation championship. Only one team will have the bragging rights come Sunday.
