The Northern Cape Department of Health mourns the passing of one of its diligent public servants who dedicated 38 years to serving the Department.

Dr Piotrowski migrated to South Africa IN 1982 and was employed at West End Specialised Hospital in Kimberley as a medical officer and later registered as a Psychiatrist. He was instrumental in decentralizing mental health care services and establishing sustainable mental health outreach services, a registrar program, and child and adolescent units in the Province, notwithstanding regular visits to all primary healthcare facilities since his appointment.

The Department paid homage to the late doctor, whose passing is regarded as a significant loss to the community of the Northern Cape. He succumbed to a long illness on 31 December 2023.

“As a Psychiatrist, he was very passionate and dedicated to his job and his patients at the West End Specialised Hospital in Kimberley,” mentioned the Head of Department, Mxolisi Mlatha.

The HOD spoke highly of Piotrowski’s long-standing service, “Traveling long distances by car during mental health outreach services allowed him to admire the Province’s landscape. He retired in 2010, but he worked ten more years because he was passionate about his work.”

“The Department lost a significant person in Dr. Piotrowski, whom we thought would continue to play an essential role in strengthening mental health services and improving service delivery for many years to come,” said MEC Lekwene.

The Northern Cape Health MEC, Mr. Maruping Lekwene, and acting HOD, Mr. Mxolisi Mlatha, and Senior management, will visit the family of Dr. Piotrowski to offer their condolences. The officials pledge their support and ask members of the communities to keep the bereaved family in their thoughts and prayers.

“May the soul of Dr Zygmunt Piotrowski rest in eternal peace. He will be missed,” said Lekwene.Good
