The  Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA) says it expects contractors contracted to build houses in various Districts of the Northern Cape to deliver quality houses.

The Department has been crisscrossing the province, introducing appointed contractors who will construct houses as part of the 1 Billion Rand Presidential Housing Project.

During the recent four-day community engagement session with contractors for Joe Morolong Municipality, the Department’s spokesperson Tebogo Monyo, said the project seeks to fast-track housing delivery and address the housing backlog in the province.  Monyo announced that the appointed contractors will build 560 Breaking New Ground Houses in that municipality.  President Cyril Ramaphosa, with Northern Cape Premier Dr Zamani Saul, launched Kimberley’s R1 billion housing project in January.  The government announced that at least 18000 stands have been serviced for the project.

Communities are urged to work with contractors to ensure the smooth running of the projects.

Despite opposition parties saying the launch was part of campaigning for the ruling party, Premier Saul said the project seeks to address the housing backlog in the province.

Monyo said the Department expects all contractors to deliver quality houses and avoid unnecessary construction delays.  The Department also pleaded with communities to work with contractors and subcontractors to ensure a smooth implementation of the project.

Monyo said:” As part of this massive housing project in the Northern Cape, the John Taolo Gaetsewe District was allocated more than 500 BNG houses that to be built in the Joe Morolong Municipality to address the huge housing backlog in the district, particularly in the Joe Morolong Municipality.

Introducing the four contractors appointed to build these houses and the ten beneficiaries from the municipality takes us to our goal of addressing the housing challenges.  All contractors are expected to identify the sites and construction to start speedily,” said Monyo.

In the meantime, construction is continuing without hindrances in some municipalities, including Sol Plaatje.
