The Diamond Oval in Kimberley has been hosting the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup since the beginning of the tournament on 19 January 2024. The tournament is now at the Super Six stage, where four countries have been eliminated.
The first Super Six match featured Sri Lanka against the West Indies on 30 January. Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first, setting a target of 232 runs. Dinura Kalupahana’s impressive 50 off 76 balls anchored their innings.
In response, the West Indies showcased resilience with Steve Wedderburn’s half-century and critical partnership. Despite a valiant effort by Sri Lanka’s bowlers, West Indies secured victory, winning by three wickets with three balls to spare.
On 31 January, the battle was between Australia and England. England won the toss and elected to field first. England faced a formidable challenge as Australia posted a commendable total of 266/6 in 50 overs. The innings were highlighted by HD Weibgen’s spectacular century, scoring 100 off 109 balls.
England struggled during the rain-interrupted chase in response, managing 60/4 in 9.3 overs. The match concluded with Australia claiming victory by 110 runs, courtesy of the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method, underscoring the unpredictable nature of cricket.
Australia will play the West Indies at the Diamond Oval on Friday, 2 February 2024, in the tournament’s final match in Kimberley.
