The Kgosi Galeshewe Athletics (KGA) club hosted its first half marathon last week as the two years old organisation commemorated its namesake with a well executed event.
Winnie Mobita Spokesperson for KGA said: “This is our first race that we are doing in honour of Kgosi Galeshewe. We live in Kimberley in the township of Galeshewe yet up to now we didn’t have an annual event for the late King. He was a pioneer in the history of Kimberley and South Africa as a whole. A chief who fought against the Cape colony government”.
The half marathon began at 6:30am. The event calendar consisted of the 21.1km half marathon but also a 10km and 5km race. These were happening simultaneously with the main half marathon.
The races attracted 225 participants with most entrants being seasoned runners as well as a sprinkling of first time runners. There were numerous running clubs who took part as well including Teemaneng Running Club, Kimberley Harriers, as well as Kuruman and Kgosi Galeshewe Athletics.
There were also governmental organisations that participated which included runners from the department of Correctional Services and the South African Police Service.
Tiisetso Mokhoma won the half marathon and Arthur Jantjies was the runner up. Shadrack Selaledi came in at number three. The 10km race was won by Amantle Modingwane,. His number two was Simphiwe Mqayisa and third place went to Atisang Seithuti. The 5km race was won by Tebogo Moipolai and Sipho Moitse toop the second podium while Obakeng Riet reserved third place.
Mobita observed that this was also a fun day out for the family. Businesses had various stalls selling and promoting their products and services to the attendees. “It was a nice day with the sun out and the community and Kimberley came out to enjoy itself along with all the visitors from neighbouring towns in the province”.
