The Kimberley Road Runners started the year with the Vodacom Meerkat Marathon on 3 February 2024. The marathon started at 5:30 from Windhoek Draught Park.
The day’s
main attraction was the 42.2-kilometer marathon, attracting seasoned runners and enthusiasts alike. Athletes were spoiled for choice with races ranging from 4.9, 10, and 21.1-kilometers, to ensure participation of different skill levels and to create activities for all family members.
The 10-kilometer race held a special significance, hosting the Athletics Griqua Land West’s (AGW) 10km Championships. This served as a crucial preparatory event for the upcoming Athletics South Africa (ASA) National 10km Championships, to be held on 10 March 2024 in Johannwsburg. Katlego Shomeleile 31:56 (Open), Siphiwe Mqaisa 32:32 (Open), Diteko Motshabi 32:52 (Junior), AJ Sabbat 35:43 (Junior) and Deacon Hendricks 35:43 (Junior) have all qualified to represent AGW at the upcoming ASA championship.
The 42.2-kilometer male race winners were: Arthur Jantjies 2:32:17 (Open), Ricardo Swarts 2:36:23 (Open) and Thabang Masihleho 2:38:56 (Open). The winners of the 42.2-kilometre female: Anel Viljoen 3:36:51 (Veteran), Mellissa Du Plessis 3:51:01 (Open) and Manneheng Raphuting 3:51:10 (Vetaran).
The event created an atmosphere for participants and spectators, with vibrant market stalls displaying and selling various items.
