PMG Mining in Postmansburg took the opportunity to contribute towards food security by donating seeds to the community. The noble act was in commemoration of Arbor Week.
The mine also appeals to all South Africans to plant native trees to sustain the environment.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, contributes significantly to preventing food insecurity in our various communities.
As a front-runner for community projects, PMG Mining Company donated: seeds, shady and fruit trees to three high schools; five primary schools; two clinics; one hospital and two libraries.
The seeds planted, particularly at schools, will provide much-needed relief in the school feeding schemes.
PMG Mine manager John-Ross Van Nel said: “It is paramount for us as a mining company to reinvest in our communities in the Tsantsabane region. To alleviate food insecurity, we all must have an integrated approach to these projects and work together. Our communities require the help of all stakeholders, as the public sector and civil organisations cannot do this alone. As PMG, we will not rest on our laurels to donate and bring relief to the communities we serve.”
All beneficiaries were thankful to PMG Mining.
Postmasburg Primary School principal Lynette Stander said: “We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to PMG Mining for their generous donation of shading trees to our school – just in time for Arbor day! Not only did they provide these beautiful trees, but they also rolled up their sleeves and helped us plant them. Their commitment to our school community and the environment is truly inspiring.”
Stander highlights the importance of this gesture to enhance a greener environment at the school, “our school grounds are now cooler, greener, and more inviting. We look forward to strengthen the relationship with the mine” she indicated.
Arbor week is observed in the first week of September.
