NC: 2023 ROAD SAFETY “ARRIVE ALIVE” CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED IN KIMBERLEY
Kimberley – 8 December 2023 The MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Me Nomandla Bloem launched the 2023 Road Safety “Arrive Alive” Festive Season Campaign on Friday, 08 December 2023, at the N12 weighbridge in Kimberley.
The launch was also attended by the HOD for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Mr Rodney Pieterse, acting HOM for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Me Margaret Molefe, Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection, Maj Gen Mmantsheke Lekhele, the Frances Baard District Commissioner, Maj Gen Johan Bean, the PRO for Community Police Board, Mr Themba Gomba, Labour unions, SANTACO and other relevant stakeholders.
Phase one started with an opening prayer by Colonel Pieter Jansen and the welcoming address was delivered by the HOD for Department Transport Safety and Liaison, Rodney Pieterse who emphasized one death on our roads is one death too many.
A message of support was delivered by Maj Gen Lekhele who reiterated that the SAPS will have more boots on the ground and a multi-disciplinary zero tolerance approach will be the order of the day.
During the keynote address MEC Bloem emphasized that drinking and driving is one of the main causes of fatalities on our roads. The roadblocks, vehicle check points, fatigue education and continuous heightened operations with the relevant force multipliers will be implemented throughout the festive season and beyond.
The Provincial Deputy Director for Road Safety, Nonkoliseko Joka relayed the Festive Season Road Safety Plan for 2023. A Pledge was signed by all principals from the SAPS, Transport Safety and Liaison and all traffic chiefs in the province.
MEC Bloem also handed over seven brand new traffic vehicles as part of the safety plan to bolster the policing road traffic offenses and ensure that everyone arrives alive.
The vote of thanks was done by the acting HOM for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Me Margaret Molefe and reiterated her appreciation to all stakeholders that are going the extra mile to keep the Northern Cape roads safe during the festive season and beyond.
The second phase of the launch continued at the N12 Roadblock when MEC Bloem, Maj Gen Lekhele and her entourage engaged with motorists and handed out safety hint pamphlets and marketing materials on keeping safe and arriving alive at their respective destinations.
The roadblock was activated from 10:00 to 12:00 and achieved several successes as members stopped and searched 131 vehicles, 380 persons and issued 8 traffic fines to the value of R6250-00.
Roadblocks and vehicle check points will be ongoing during the festive season and beyond to ensure road safety and also to eliminate all criminal elements and occurrence of accidents in our roads.
