The Northern Cape provincial government has partnered with manufacturing and Engineering and related services (merSETA). The deal worth R210 million will provide the youth with training, bursaries and employment.
Over 2000 young people in the province will benefit from the project. Premier Dr. Zamani Saul said he is happy that the province, which is one of the most ignored, will highly benefit from this agreement. The Premier was delighted and said this massive boost would curb the high unemployment rate in the province.
“Through this cash injection, we will equip young people in this very critical sector of the economy. Manufacturing and engineering services are important in growing our economy,” said Saul.
Meanwhile, the Acting CEO of merSETA, Disa Mpande, said she is excited to partner with the provincial government to ensure that young people are up-skilled and give back to the community. Mande also mentioned that they would also invest in technical schools to revamp laboratories.
“We are very passionate about skills development. We’ve seen in our experience that by the time young people get to TVET College, they don’t go there because they want to. They go there because they don’t have any other option. We want to start it while they are still young so that they are excited about technical opportunities and hand skills,” concluded the CEO.
The Premier’s office indicated that more information will be shared after consultation with all relevant stakeholders.
