With the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children nearing to an end, SAPS management remains committed in the fight against the scourge of gender based violence and femicide by ensuring that justice is served to all the survivors of gender based violence.
The Warrenton Regional Court recently convicted and sentenced a 35-year-old male accused to 5 years’ direct imprisonment for the statutory raping of a 12-year-old girl.
In September 2020 the Department of Social Development became aware of the incident and reported the matter to the relevant law enforcement agencies.
The court judgement also declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm and the name of the accused be entered into the national register for sexual offenders.
The court judgement further ordered that the accused should not work with children.
The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola called on communities, government entities, faith and traditional leaders to unite and take action in the prevention and elimination of violence against women and children. She applauded D/Sgt Sidwell Dastile for his thorough investigative work that led to the removal of the perpetrator from society.
