Hundreds of security guards in the Northern Cape demand the government to employ them permanently. This comes after about 700 security guards were not paid their monthly salaries in April.  Some guards employed by Defensor security company who did not want to be named for fear of being victimized said they are working under appalling conditions. They complain about poor salaries and having to work without equipment for trade.

It is alleged they did not get their salaries after their company’s contract with the health department ended.  The affected workers are posted at facilities of the provincial Health Department across the province.

Frustrated security officers say receiving what is due to them is a struggle. are yet to receive their monthly salaries.

Their plight persists despite some engagements involving unions, the Department of Health and the contracted company.

One security guard said:” We want to be hired permanently because security companies are exploiting us despite receiving millions from the government.”

Trade union Hospersa’s provincial secretary Deon Olivier has expressed concern about treatment security received.

He said: “We are concerned that the people who render services must suffer like this.  We receive many complaints from guards about their companies”.

This is not the first time that security guards in the province have complained about unpaid wages and undesirable conditions of employment.

They have previously raised concerns about resources of trade, bonuses, overtime, allowances and unfair dismissals.

The Northern Cape Health Department’s HOD Mxolisi Mlatha says their company did not pay the security guards.
