The National Department of Justice and Correctional Services recently announced the Grade 12 results under the theme “Educate to rehabilitate.” The ceremony was held at Leeuwkop Correctional Centre streamed to all the regions.
Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi commended the Department for bringing education in prison facilities. “Education will indeed prosper us and that is why we celebrate such occasions.” he added.
Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronald Lamola opened with a poem written by an ex offender, titled, ‘Where’s the time’. “The class of 2020 overcame tremendous challenges, they are made of steel. Mama Angie is a true Imbokodo for insisting that we finish the academic year,” said the proud Lamola.
The minister congratulated inmates for taking such a brave step towards their future, “It does not end here,” he concluded.
A total of 124 inmates across correctional facilities in the country sat for the examination. They achieved an 86% pass rate. The department boasts a 71 bachelor’s pass, 23 diplomas and 13 attained a higher certificate pass.

Thereafter the Free State and Northern Cape Region held a prize giving ceremony at Tswelopele Centre for the ten male offenders from the facility.
Tswelopele obtained 90% pass rate.
Free State and Northern Cape Regional Commissioner, Subashni Moodley commended the efforts of all stakeholders, “We would not be here had it not been for the role played by educators and the Department of Education.” Moodley read a famous quote by Malcom X, “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today,” a quote she believed was relevant for the occasion. “I am extremely proud of the learners” said Moodley.
The Northern Cape MEC for Education Zolile Monakali spoke highly of the inmates, “These are not your typical learners. The level of commitment displayed by these men will not go unnoticed, considering the fact that they live in a confined area,” acknowledged Monakali.

“The 2020 results warmed my heart. If you want to challenge the problems in our country, education is the only sustainable solution,” added Monakali.
The ten learners received certificates of participation. Certificates of recognition were issued to deserving learners and the top three achievers were awarded certificate and prizes. Mojalefa Setlai took third position, Thabang Mabote came in second place and Elias Diphoko, serving a 25 year jail sentence, was the top performer.
Two Educators were also awarded for their dedication and hard work.
One of the proud learners, serving a 28 year jail term says he did not allow the lengthy sentence to prevent him from matriculating.
