As citizens were preparing to cast their votes during the National and Provincial Elections, Operation Shanela continues to ensure a safe and secure environment for all inhabitants.
The ongoing Operation Shanela high density operations were executed across the province from 20 May 2024 until 26 May 2024 to address all priority crimes.
The multi-disciplinary teams collectively apprehended 250 criminals, of which 88 are wanted suspects arrested by detectives who have been evading police. The suspects were wanted in connection with serious crimes including business robbery, murder, rape and assault GBH.
Other arrests included unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, dealing in drugs, illegal dealing in liquor, murder, attempted murder, rape and assault.
Roadblocks, vehicle check points, as well as stop and search actions were executed, whereby 8 274 persons and 3 767 vehicles were stopped and searched.
Compliance inspections were conducted at second hand goods dealers, firearms dealers, informal businesses and liquor outlets. This resulted in the closure of 4 unlicensed liquor outlets and the confiscation of a significant amount of liquor.
Disruptive actions affected the confiscation of drugs, dangerous weapons and unlawful firearms.
Several awareness campaigns and community interactions were led in the province to address contact crimes and child safety.
Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola welcomed the arrest of perpetrators and assured the community that Operation Shanela will persistently continue during the Elections period and beyond.
