As the country is observing Child Protection Week, the Upington Regional Court convicted and sentenced a 22 year old man to 5 years imprisonment wholly suspended for 5 years on a charge of Statutory Rape on 7 May 2024.
On Friday, 28 July 2023, Winston Maans found the 13 year old victim at a tuck-shop, he followed her and invited her to accompany him, which she refused. He forcefully grabbed her and took her to his place where he raped her.
The victim suffered infections after a period of time and upon doctor’s visits, it was discovered that she was pregnant. A case was reported to the police for investigation and Winston was arrested.
The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, applauded the member, Sergeant Elliot Geya for the sterling investigation and reiterated that SAPS is adopting a no tolerance approach when it comes to crimes perpetrated against women and children.
