SAPS NC Walks for cancer awareness

The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape South African Police Services Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola on Wednesday hosted the “Pink and Blue Walk” in Kimberley in support of cancer awareness.

The Pink and Blue Walk was preceded by an opening prayer conducted by a police chaplain before the 9km walk started at the Trim Park in Oliver Road. The event concluded at the SANDF sports grounds in Diskobolos, Kimberley.

The walk was held in conjunction with the SAPS Women’s Network, Men for Change, the Department of Health, the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison, the Department of Correctional Services, the SANDF and the Provincial SAPS Management and local police stations within the greater Kimberley area.

Other stakeholders who participated in the event were the SANBS, Community Police Forum, POLMED, Virgin Active, Metropolitan Health Risk Management, GEMS, Magic Lab, Croftassage and Liberty.

The SAPS allowed participants to donate blood, conduct health screenings and sports massages, and participate in sporting activities such as mass aerobics and Zumba at the SANDF.

The formal Programme commenced with a welcoming address by the Provincial Head of Proactive Policing, Brigadier Irene Kopeledi.

The head of Oncology at Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital Dr Daniel Osei-Fofie delivered a cancer awareness address.  Dr Osei-Fofie also relayed vital information regarding breast, prostate, and cervical cancer and the different treatments offered by the state.

Lt Gen Otola delivered the keynote address in which she praised the more than 500 participants for their support and turnout at the Pink and Blue Walk.

Otola specifically focused on taking personal responsibility for one’s health and doing regular body checks as “early detection” is a crucial for victory over cancer.

The Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection, Maj Gen Mmantsheke Lekhele praised all the participants and stakeholders for their valuable and generous contributions to the cause. Lekhele thanked all sponsors and stakeholders for supporting the robust cancer awareness campaign.

SAPS personnel sponsored cupcakes which were sold to raise funds for cancer awareness. The funds were donated to the oncology department at the RMS hospital in Kimberley. The cupcakes were also donated to various charity organizations in the city.
