SEKGORO FAMILY DISSAPPOINTED AT MAYOR

By Olebogeng Molale

The family of a woman who died in a shack fire with her children early this year has expressed their disappointment at Sol Plaatje Mayor Patrick Mabilo. The Sekgoro family from Galeshewe alleges that the Mayor has not fulfilled his promise that the municipality will build a shack for two of the remaining children of the late Patricia Matlaka Sekgoro from Snake Park.

The family says the Mayor and his committee have failed to deliver on their promise. The late woman’s aunt, Olga Mancwe, says, “the Mayor had promised that Sol Plaatje Municipality will build a temporary structure for the two remaining children within a week after the funeral.” According to Mancwe, after the funeral, the Mayor has been sending them from pillar to post without providing details on when the municipality will fulfill the promise they made in March.

“We are tired of running after the Mayor, because he is the one who promised that the municipality will continue to help the family, particularly the children who are now orphans. Whenever we organise a meeting, he is not at the office and his phone goes unanswered,” said the family member.

The aunt added, “we have run out of plans. Our leaders do not take care of us. We are not asking for money, but we are pleading that the children should at least have a place they can call home. As it stands, we do not know what will happen to their mother’s stand because the municipality has not built a shack and this can attract illegal occupants.”

Mancwe highlighted that currently, the two children are staying with their grandmother in Retswelele. She says they will continue to plead with the municipality to honor the promise made by the Mayor.

The family says it continues to grieve and is thankful to the community of Snake Park for their support during their time of grief.

We were still waiting for a response from the office of the Mayor by the time we went to print.
