Sol Restores Two Community Halls

In an effort to restore the Recreation Hall and the Social Centre in Galeshewe to their former glory, teams within the Sol Plaatje Municipality are cleaning and refurbishing the facilities.
The Recreation hall, which was vandalised during the 2018 community uprising, will soon open its doors to the public.
Sol Plaatje Municipality spokesperson, Sello Matsie, lamented that vagrants had removed electrical cables. The ceiling, doors and other equipment were damaged since the Covid-19 outbreak last year. He says security personnel will be deployed to protect the facilities daily.
The piles of debris and rubble, next to the Social Centre and nearby St James Anglican Church, have been cleared. “Sadly, parents continue the practice of sending children to dump rubbish at these sites. The municipality will be looking at increasing community participation to safeguard these facilities,” said Matsie.
“The halls were previously used for various functions including worship, funerals, sports and music shows. Hence it is important to preserve them,” highlighted Matsie.
After restoration, these facilities will continue to be used for community-related gatherings and as Service Centers.
The By-Law Enforcement section will operate from these facilities. They will prioritise the scourge of illegal dumping. The municipality is reviewing the penalties to render stricter punishments to offenders.
To prevent the reoccurrence of theft and vandalism, Matsie emphasised that the facilities will be well secured. He stressed that they would need the community to be vigilant and report suspicious activities.
