SPM invests to raise city’s sparkle

Sol Plaatje municipality (SPM) has announced a list of high end projects that it hopes will act as a catalyst to rejuvenate the local economy and kickstart a jobs wave. 

SPM Mayor Kagisho Sonyoni and the newly appointed municipal manager Thapelo Matlala announced the grand economic revival plans at at press briefing about a fortnight ago. 

* Eris Property Group – R196m – Construct 670+ student accommodation units on land identified at the Oppenheimer Gardens in the Kimberley central business district. 

* Alexanderfontein Farm – R50m – Construction of mixed use development which includes the establishment of 123 residential units in Greenpoint and Ronalsdsvlei on a 50 hectare plot around the Kimberley airport precinct. 

* Piet Els Family Trust – R60m – Development of 106 erven for mixed use comprising several residential units and a business complex in the MacDougal street area opposite the Gariep hospital. 

* Sol Plaatje University – R150m – This is an ongoing development of the south and the central campuses. The next phase includes the commencement of the north campus on Oppenheimer Gardens – This will include construction of the SPU’s Great Hall. 

* AfriKhaya Development – R300m – Building of 1056 residential units at Floors township, Kimberley. Construction scheduled for 2023-24. 

* Hull Street development- R350m – This is primarily a social housing project – It is ongoing and encompasses the construction of 600 residential units financed by national Government.

* Kutlwano Day Care – R5m – This is a state-of-the-art Day Care centre in Greenpoint, Kimberley – The Airports company is a partner in this investment which was initiated in 2022. 

* KRD development – R6bn – (Kimberley Rehabilitation and Development) – An investment of unspecified properties – It is geared at mix use development covering 1100 residential units – It is aimed essentially at revitalising the Kimberley CBD. 

* Middle Income Erven – R34m – This projects targets the subdivision and rezoning of 58 residential and business sites in Carters Glen, Kimberley. 

* Aquaponic Lease – This is an approved agricultural investment project situated at the Droogfontein Solar farm near Riverton north of the Kimberley CBD. 

* Middle Income Development – R53m – This development includes the establishment of 409 unserviced erven across all wards of Kimberley – The project will ensure favourable returns to municipality. The project is divided as follows: 

Phomolong 1610. 

Moghul 10 

Southridge 100 

Herlear 11. 

Roodepan 100. 

Retswelele 29. 

* DC Construction Centre – R110m – This is a mixed use residential and business development situated opposite the North Cape Mall along the N12 national route. 

* Renewable Energy development – Investment in this project is unquantified. It was recently approved by the Kimberley city council – It is aimed addressing loadshedding – SPM hopes to be the first town to become energy independent away from the Eskom electricity supply.

SPM hopes to rope in significant private sector interest. 

* Skilpad Saal lease – This development is by the state pharmaceutical company and includes private sector partners – It is aimed at job creation within the city precincts which incorporate the DeBeers suburb east of the CBD. 

* KRD Lease – Frans’ Farm Vooruitsig – This is a development for 4000 residential units on property along the R31 – 

The project on the R31 Lease includes approval for a crusher plant on 20 hectare piece of land. 

# Old Ottoskopje Development (Ward 8) – R45m – Land acquisition from SPM – to develop mall within precinct of Galeshewe. 

The projects are at varying degrees of implementation while the bulk of the developments have recently been approved by the Kimberley city council.
