The nation grappling with coalition

While a number of political parties including the ANC are planning on intensifying coalition talks on who they wish their coalition partners will be, some Northern Cape communities have tabled their preferred coalition political parties.

The current scenario of coalition governments in a number of provinces including the Northern Cape is as a result of the ruling ANC not attaining its majority. Only 40. 2  of the electorate nationally, voted the African National Congress, a decline from 57.5 percent in 2019 elections.

In the Northern Cape ANC secured 49.3% of votes,  a low voter percentage since the democratic elections in 1994. The percent are evident that the ANC has to work with some of its nemesis.

Nationally statistics have revealed that DA, uMkhonto we Sizwe Party, EFF and IFP attained a large number of voters.

Some citizens in the Northern Cape had mixed feelings about the looming coalition:

Masego Voss from Kimberley said:” As a young citizen of the Northern Cape, I am writing to express my passionate appeal for the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters to consider forming a coalition. I firmly believe that together, you can harness your collective strength, diverse perspectives and shared commitment to South Africa’s prosperity to drive meaningful change. ”

Bayekeni Ntaka from Stillwaters said:”I wish to see three parties in coalition ANC, EFF, Mk. I can’t mention DA because when you see Western Cape is where DA is leading. Ten years without service delivery. I think in the government of a coalition of these parties we will see a difference.  EFF is fighting for service delivery everywhere in South Africa, since after President Zuma we are suffering even RDP houses we don’t see any more”.

Mpho Montsho from Kuruman said:” I prefer EFF le ANC partnership because they ideologies are almost the same, especially on land issues. EFF is fighting for students to get financial assistance to go to tertiary institutions while ANC has been helping people with access to health facilities. I think the two organizations can work together to change the lives of South Africans”.

While talks of ANC and DA coalition gain momentum, ANC alliance partners COSATU, SACP and SANCO have flatly rejected this partnership saying it will take South Africa backwards.

Meanwhile, the ruling ANC has admitted defeat but says it will work harder to retain the lost ground.
