THE NORTHERN CAPE SAPS PROMOTES CHILD PROTECTION WEEK

The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola reiterated that the protection of children remains one of the priorities of the SAPS and that *ALL CHILDREN within the boarders of South Africa have the right to be protected.

The Northern Cape SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences(FCS) units accompanied by the SAPS Visible Policing units, Detectives, Sector Policing, Womens Network, Men for Change, Community Police Forums, Social Crime Prevention, the Safety Participants from the Department of Transport Safety and Liaison, Education Department, FAMSA and Department of Social Development celebrated Child Protection Week between 29 May – 05 June 2024.

The collective multi-disciplinary teams in Frances Baard, Pixley Ka Seme, ZF Mgcawu, Namaqua and John Taolo Gaetsewe Districts teams addressed more than 6000 learners and community members regarding general bullying, cyber bullying, sexual offences, teenage pregnancy, social ills, dangerous weapons, substance abuse, and school/general discipline.

Several schools across the province were visited, namely Douglas, Warrenton, Kakamas, Pofadder, Port Nolloth, Warrenton, Tsineng, Kathu, De Aar, Marydale, Kuruman, Petrusville, Plooysburg and Van Zylsrus.

The learners were reminded of basic safety hints and of their right to be protected, treated with dignity, not to be human-trafficked, to be able to go to school, to be cared for, and not to be treated cruelly.

The children were told to protect and respect their bodies and that of others. They were compelled to break the silence and speak out if they knew of anyone who is being abused.

The learners were entertainment by the SAPS Provincial Band and received coloring books, pencil cases, book markers, stationery, safety hint flyers, toiletries, and school shoes.

The campaign forms part of the SAPS recognizing Child Protection Week and Youth Month, under the theme “Protecting South African Children, 30 years on”.
