The meticulous investigation by Constable Joseph Van Wyk of Upington Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences was applauded for securing a hefty sentence handed down to 30 year old uncle for Rape.
The 13 year old victim reported to her mother that her uncle has been raping her since the age of five and most of the incidents happened when she arrived home from school. The matter was reported to the police and the victim underwent medical assessment, which confirmed that she was indeed raped.
The uncle was arrested and charged with rape and he was sentenced on 09 May 2024 to 18 years of imprisonment, of which three years is suspended for five years.
The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, welcomed the sentence and said the SAPS in the Northern Cape will continue with the fight against GBVF and ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
