Unrest Unfolds as Kimberley Academy Sets to Open Doors

Disgruntled members of Wards 12 and 4 camped outside the Kimberley Academy in Nyathi Highway, Galeshewe (the former Redirile Primary School), three days before the schools re-opened for the academic year.

Law enforcement officers were stationed outside the academy to prevent potential escalations. The disgruntled members expressed their frustration over alleged favoritism in employment practices. According to the members, the hiring procedure was marred by nepotism, favoring those with political connections over merit and qualifications. Allegedly three people appointed as General Workers from their wards hold positions within the branch structures of the ANC or are allies to Ward Councillor Isaac Ruiter.   The appointed comrades include the wife to the ANC Branch Chairperson and a Branch Executive Member.

However, Ruiter indicated that more than 4,000 applications and only six candidates were appointed.

One of the members stated that after the councillor raised their hopes, they were told to put their names on the list for employment. However, they were still sidelined and referred to opportunities for employment in their surrounding area.

Ruiter explained that, as a Ward councillor, he only wishes to have people from his ward be appointed. The Ward Councillor said he does not work for the Department of Education and cannot interfere with their processes.

We are still awaiting feedback from the Department of Education to clear the allegations.
