Vice Chancellor’s Cycling Challenge thrills!

Bike riders Madiseng Motlatso won the female 100.8 km race while Jean Fourie won the male 100.8 km race of the Sol Plaatje University’s Vice Chancellor Cycling Challenge 2023 which took place in Kimberley last Sunday.
The number of race participants who signed up for this race was well over the 100 mark during Sunday’s event. There were not a lot of spectators, though the cycling community came in numbers including members from well appointed cycling clubs such as from Bloemfontein.
Participant and community member Mario Marthinus remarked that: “It was a good race and the turnout was awesome. We don’t have too many races so really, we enjoyed it and we are here to support the university.”
The race challenge was accompanied by a flea market browsing opportunity for the spectators who pitched up in droves at the end of the challenge.
There were different stalls for people to buy a variety of products from. Chad Lucas, the Economic Activation Officer of Sol Plaatje University. who said, “We are here to support entrepreneurship and the local markets…… We are happy with the quality of our vendors.”.
The vendor’s products and services ranged from confectioneries, artwork, jumping castles and water slides for the kids to dog food.
The sum total of all the prize winners money handed out to the winners on the day amounted to R20 000. Thanks to the sponsors involved such as FNB, Alpha Beta Cycles and Infinitude Multisport Coaching.
The Vice Chancellor Professor Andrew Crouch was happy with how the day went stating, “For me it’s wonderful to see cyclers coming in their droves. For me it is a sport, but it can also be used for health and wellness and that is what we are trying to promote.”
